Abstract: This paper presents a systematic investigation of the effect of critical parameters on the peak pullout resistance of soil nails, including degree of saturation, grouting pressure, overburden pressure, and roughness conditions of soil nails according to both laboratory and field pullout test results. Influences of the above parameters on apparent coefficient of friction(ACF) are quantitatively investigated; and to facilitate the evaluation of influences of these parameters on ACF values, a normalized ACF is proposed for different pullout testing conditions. It is found that the dependence of ACF on overburden soil pressure is the highest (ACF ranges from 0-1) while this dependence is the lowest for degree of saturation of soils (ACF ranges from 0-0.18).

Key words: soil nails, peak pullout resistance, apparent coefficient of friction, overburden soil pressure, grouting pressure, degree of saturation
