Preliminary research on 3-D hierarchical composite element method for jointed rock masses

Abstract: This paper explains the basic principle of composite element method and introduces the concept of virtual node and generalized node used in the hierarchical finite element method. Then the concept of covered virtual edge (face) and generalized edge (face) is put forward; and the further classification of virtual node and generalized node is presented. Based on it, displacement function with different orders on the 3-D composite element for jointed rock masses is constructed and the element stiffness matrix is derived. Numerical examples show the rationality and efficiency of the theory. The concept presented is helpful to understand and realize the hierarchy of composite element method and traditional finite element method as a whole, and establish the foundation of p-version adaptivity of 3-D hierarchical composite element method for jointed rock masses.
