Abstract: By establishing displacement optimization function based on some measured geostresses, a new approach of getting initial geostress field in the whole interested region is represented, which adjusts displacement boundary conditions automatically and make full use of 3-D finite element calculation. Finally, this method is applied to underground power houses of Three Gorges Project. The calculated results are in good agreement with the measured ones; and it is proved that this method is effective.

Key words: initial geostress field, displacement boundary conditions, optimization function, tectonic stress, underground power houses
