Research on failure mode of clay slope containing horizontal sand interlayer under excavation conditions

Abstract: Slopes containing interlayers are common phenomenon in practice and it makes sense to research stabilities of such slopes. So far as the recent research is concerned, it mainly focuses on the stability of rock slope and little recognition of clay slope is involved. In fact, it is more dangerous for clay slopes containing interlayers under excavation conditions and correct recognition of failure modes of clay slopes contribute to the reasonable assessment of stability. Some centrifuge model tests were conducted with clay slopes containing interlayers in the middle part under excavation conditions. Comparison of failure modes was made between clay slopes with and without a 5 cm thick horizontal sand interlayer. The results show that the existence of sand interlayer diminishes the stability of slope; and the bottom boundary of sand interlayer is the weak plane
