Abstract: Controlling the impact on the environment is the key point for the earth pressure balance (EPB) shield construction. Based on the Yingbinsanlu tunnel project constructed by the ?14.27 m earth pressure balance shield in Shanghai, field measurement is executed to study the development and distribution of the ground settlement and the relationship between the ground settlement and construction parameters. According to analyzing the measured data, it could be found that the underlying law of the ground settlement development is determined by the chamber pressure and synchronization grouting parameters. Bad filling effect of the synchronization grouting may lead to obvious development of ground surface settlement in a large region and the settlement rate of ground surface above the shield tail is maximum. Good filling effect of the synchronization grouting could effectively control the ground surface settlement. The Peck formula is suitable for the bad filling condition. In addition, measured data reveal that pore pressure would dissipate which leads to the gradually development of the ground surface settlement; and the settlement rate of ground surface above the shield tail is maximum during a long-time standstill of the EPB shield.

Key words: super-diameter EPB shield, ground settlement, construction parameters, shield standstill
