Abstract: According to the distribution of horizontal strain in the soil under embankment loads, the characteristic of lateral deformations along the depth is analyzed based on measured data and existing research results. The results show that the typical curve is bow-shaped. On this point, the predicted model is established to forecast the lateral deformation. The three parameters in the model, a, b and c can be easily solved. This model has been applied to study 2 cases. The model can reflect both the distribution of lateral deformation along depth and the location where the maximum deformation occurs. The comparisons demonstrate that the predicted deformations are in good agreements with the measured data.
