Application of Biot’s consolidation theory to improving soft ground by preloading method

Abstract: A method, drainage with plastic board, was used to improve the soft ground by preloading method for a row material site of a certain steel-iron factory at the bank of the Yangtze river; and it has yielded good results. In this paper,FEM of Biot’s consolidation theory is applied to calculate the consolidation of foundation. The plastic board is rationally simplified to equivalent sand-wall. The measured results are favorably coincident with the numerical results; and that verifies feasibility of the computational method.
