Theory of two-dimensional electro-osmotic consolidation of soils

Abstract: By dividing the area of the ground, solution of two-dimensional consolidation theory, which is based on Esrig’s one-dimension consolidation theory, is provided and discussed for the three kinds of boundary conditions: anode closed and cathode open; cathode closed and anode open; anode and cathode open. It proves that the ultimate excess pore-water pressure produced by electro-osmosis may be positive or negative, whose maximum is determined by the difference of electric potential between cathode and anode, whose distribution depends on the potential distribution and boundary conditions; and is independent of the initial conditions.
