Stability analysis of surrounding rock mass of Longtan underground caverns

Abstract: The stability of large underground cavern has high dependence on construction sequences and permanent support parameters. Longtan underground powerhouse is a complex structure with three large caverns and located in high dipped laminar strata. FLAC3D code is applied to analyze the character of deformation and failure mechanism of surrounding rock mass during excavation and support. Furthermore, the comparison between numerical results and field measurements shows that the variation law is quite similar, while the numerical data are a little greater than that of the measurements. It can be concluded that FLAC 3D can simulate excavation of large underground caverns in high dipping laminar strata well.
