Abstract: The anisotropic mechanical behaviours are widely observed in the saturated and partially saturated geomaterials. This paper makes use of a anisotropic constitutive model developed by Rudnicki for geomaterials to model the anisotropic mechanical behaviors of saturated and partially saturated porous materials in axisymmetric compression test. Conditions for localization of strain into a shear band in fully and partially saturated porous media are derived based on the discontinuous bifurcation approach. The critical modulus, shear band angle and discontinuous velocity vector for localization of undrained condition in axisymmetric stress state are given in explicit forms. The effects of material parameters and pore fluid on localization are investigated in detail by numerical computations.
