Analysis of shear strength parameters for calculating earth pressure in soft soil foundation pit

Abstract: According to the experimental data in soft soil foundation pit in Shanghai, this paper presents the variation of calculating earth pressure based on the different shear strength parameters. Considering national codes, technical specifications and local code, combined with the practical and local experiences, the applicability of different shear strength parameters are analyzed. In the design of supporting structure for foundation pit, this paper suggests that shear strength parameters of consolidated undrained experiment should be used to calculate earth pressure; and that shear strength parameters of consolidated quick direct shear test may be used to calculate earth pressure when with credible experiences.
