Abstract: A nonlinear viscoelastic model is introduced to describe the creep behaviors of soft soil. The model is used to analyze the damaged board of a bridge-pier. The finite element computation is used to make out the reason of the damaged board of a bridge-pier. The result of the computation shows that the lateral force caused by soft clay is the main reason of the damage of the board. The effect of the reinforcing measure was computed. A method to change the building step was advanced to solve the problem. The substitution of pile with shallow foundation was computed; and the feasibility of applying shallow foundations is also demonstrated.

Key words: soft clay, creep, settlement of soft foundation, piled foundation for pier of bridge
