Effect of temperature on mechanical properties of asphalt concrete

Abstract:

Asphalt concrete is the main waterproofing material of core wall in hydraulic projects. The effects of temperature on mechanical properties of asphalt concrete is studied through testing of mechanical characteristics of asphalt concrete with two kinds of asphalt contents under different temperatures by high-pressure triaxial apparatus. Test results indicate that: the stress-strain character of asphalt concrete sample is closely related to the temperature. Stress-strain shows stress softening when temperature is 0℃, however, with temperature rise, stress softening disappears and stress hardening appears. In same asphalt content, the higher the temperature is, the smaller the maximum deviatoric stress is. The shear strength of specimen reduces with temperature rise. Creep of specimen increases with temperature rise.
