Abstract: With the block theory and orthogonal design method, the type and geometrical characterstics and stability of random key block in underground power house of the Three Gorges project are analysed. It is showed that the depth of key block in rockmass is possible to have 7-8 m although the stability of random key block in the underground power house is better; and that the embedded length of system bolts shall be greater than 7 m so as to guarantee the stability of rockmass.

Key words: Three Gorges Project , underground power house, random key block, stability
