Abstract: On the basis of appraising the existing analytical methods of slope stability, the plastic limit analysis using finite elements is put forward to analyze the slope stability. By using the idea of finite element method and linear programming, the limit analysis models of mathematical programming for slope stability are established; the model can evaluate the safety factors of lower bound and upper bound, and can give the stress field of lower bound and the velocity field upper bound at the same time. Finally, taking a classical heterogeneous soil slope for example of calculating slope stability, the comparisons among the analytical results of various methods are made. The results show the correctness of the method and the program.

Key words: plastic limit analysis, slope stability, linear programming, safety factor
